Decob: what do you do?
TAKU: I work as a DJ at famous Hong Kong clubs such as Volar and Buddha Lounge. Recently, I’ve DJ’ed for fashion brands like Silly Thing and 5cm.
I’ve also DJ’ed at private parties, self-organized beach parties and parties back in Fukuoka (where I’m from).
Decob: How do you feel about being a DJ in Hong Kong, and what is your outlook on the Hong Kong music scene?
TAKU: At first, I had the impression that the clubs here are really high-class and tailored toward members only. In my opinion, I feel like they play too much mainstream music. I mean good hand full of the regular comers is high-tongued westerners and the least they could do is to play some original stuff. Actually I’ve noticed that there’s a concentration of small clubs in Lan Kwai Fong. From time to time, I find DJs there who play stuff that are really original. We’ve also noticed that reggae isn’t really popular here compared to Japan.
The genre of music we play is a mix between Disco, House, Techno and Electro with a strong underground flavor. I firmly believe that one cannot tell a good DJ from a bad one just by listening to him/her play one session. I find that the longer you listen to a good DJ, the better it sounds. What I’m trying to say here is that DJing is like story-telling, every session is a different story and I’m happy when people understand this. There are many DJs out there that play predictable songs and so I tend to play songs that most DJs usually don’t play. I personally like ending the show with something slow paced and peaceful, however, this also depends on the mood of the crowd so I find this somewhat challenging. There are times when people requested me to play more upbeat songs at 8 in the morning. As small as Hong Kong is, there are a lot of people living here. My plan is to get big and shake up Hong Kong!
Currently I’m in the process of setting up a booking agent called Humzap Entertainment. I would like to bring DJs and artists from overseas, that we like, to Hong Kong and organize a show for them. It would also be nice to bring DJs from Hong Kong to Japan and possibly to China, Taiwan, and the rest of Asia. In November, we’ve been scheduled to play as a guest DJ with the famous Morita Masanori of Studio Apartment at a club called Dragon-i. If you have the chance please attend this show, it will be worth your time!
In the future, I would also like to start producing music for restaurants, new sportswear shops, and set aside time to compose music. Besides having many opportunities to play long dance music I would also like to get into lounge music.
If you are interested, you’re always welcome to joining the party.
Job offers are also welcome too!
