decob collaborate with Eco Shift Taito, a month-long ecological festival this November in Taito area, Tokyo Japan

With a number of various contemporary galleries and museums already up and running in communities throughout Taito area, the communities are now working together to stage a month-long festival this November to promote the ecological and sustainability art.
As part of the Eco Shift Taito 2009 held throughout November, Gallery COEXIST and Eco Shift Taito development officers have teamed up with The Nomadic decob to raise awareness of the ecological crises of our time.

The decob will be presented and displayed in the Gallery COEXIST from November 10 to 22, 2009.

The Nomadic Decob has been invited to participate in the Eco Shift Taito, eco-arts festival that will be taking place in Tokyo, Japan, from October 30 to November 22. We are running a logo design contest until September 23, 2009. The winner will have their logo used on promotional materials for the event.

This is an open call to all creative artists/designers who feel they can create a “brand” image for this environmental and ecological art festival. The new logo design must fulfill the following criteria:

1. The design must be new, unique, innovative and easily recognizable;

2. It must include the these letters Eco, Shift, and Taito

Prizes for winning logo design will be as follows:

-First Place: Name acknowledgement at the event’s website, flyer and other promotional materials.
Professional acrylic paints set provided by Turner Colour Works

-Second and Third Place: Acrylic paints set provided by Turner Colour Works

Technical details

The design will possibly be used on various backgrounds (white, black, and even other colors), and will be used in different sizes (a relatively small one on the website and badges, but a noticeably bigger one on signage). We would love submissions which work well with various colors but also with only one color used (for black and white printed materials for example).

Designs should initially be submitted as low resolution JPG or PNG files (height and width 400px maximum). The winning design must be provided either as a vector graphic in Illustrator or Inkscape native format files (.ai, .eps, .svg)

Legal information

You will be asked to transfer your copyright in the design so it can be properly protected for the benefit of the conference and community. Your design also must not include any other copyrighted materials for which any license is required. Don’t include anything which might possibly cause offense.

Deadline: Submit all entries by September 23, 2009.

Hanae Sasaoka
Hanae Sasaoka was born in Saitama, Japan and grew up in west Kanagawa. Before pursuing a career in art she earned her BA of International Business from Aoyama-Gakuin University in Tokoyo, Japan. She worked in Taiwan, China and the UK for eight years in the business field. Since changing her career path she has exhibited her work nationally and internationally throughout Tokyo, the UK and New York. Her work is included in many private collections. She lives and works in Long Island, NY. She’s been chosen as one of the New York Foundation for the Arts Immigrant Artists in the Outreach Initiative Program 2007-2008. http://www.hanaesasaoka.com

ZOORI is our original interpretation of the traditional Japanese “zouri”, simply means “cloth sandals”. These are worn by traditional Japanese more than 200 years ago. However, recently they have gained back the popularity in Japan, but this time round, the sandals are all made with variety of reusable fabrics such as old T-shirts, bed sheets, mops, even socks! They are not only environmentally friendly. They are comfortable to wear indoors, and because of ups and downs weaving patterns, they promote health as the patterns act as massaging points for the sole of the foot.

The team White Inc. has been organized ZOORI workshops in Toronto and New York since April 2009. Their next official workshops will be held at Center for Remembering & Sharing(CRS) New York on Jun 20th and 27th 2009, and Jun 29th at the Knit Cafe in Toronto Canada. We are very happy to announce the release of our new line of original limited-edition Artists bags called the decob PLATINUM.

Only 30 total copies of this exclusive bags will be sold, and can only be purchased through our upcoming online store or exhibition site. Our first official pre-sale will take place at our opening of the decob in New York, Ouchi Gallery and Zakka on June 13th. PLATINUM #1 artist, Marcos Chin and Yoko will be attendance.

Yoko Furusho

Yoko Furusho was born in Tokyo. She moved to New York for studying illustration at School of Visual Arts. After her graduation in 2008, she started her career as a professional illustrator/artist. She likes to draw details, textures and patterns with ink and acrylics. She usually uses fashion as her inspiration. She is addicted to collect fashion magazines and she likes to see many dresses and cute textiles. Now she is working as a freelance illustrator for some magazines and newspapers. Recently she had her first solo-show in New York, “EXHALE“ at destination NY art space in September 2008.

Bags for the People is a non-profit organization that provides people with a sustainable alternative to plastic bags.

Bags for the People began with three friends who worked at the Union Square Farmers Market in New York City. These three friends, Megan Talley, Glenn Robinson, and Kelly Martin, wanted to make a positive impact on the exorbitant use of plastic bags that they witnessed each and every market.

In an effort to curb plastic bag usage, Megan, Glenn, and Kelly, began making re-usable bags from recycled clothing and fabric that were to be given out for free at the market.

Formed in 2009, the art unit room 507 is based in Brooklyn, New York. Members are Arisa Itami (Vocals), Toru Yamauchi (Guitar), and Shinya Sugimoto (Sound effects). Aiming at composite art, room 507 fuses old Jazz, electronic sound and visual elements into the new style of music performance. Their performance is based on the concept which is a story set in ruined earth in the future.

Marcos Chin

Marcos Chin is regarded as one of the top illustrators in North America. He is graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 1999. His illustrations have been featured in diverse advertisements, fashion catalogs, and magazines including The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, New York Times, and Sports Illustrated. Award annuals such as The Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, Communication Arts and Applied Arts have recognized his work.

Chin’s illustrations have helped brand Lavalife’s international advertising campaign, appealing on subways,billboards, print and online. In 2004, these images were animated and shown in London, England’s “Trafalgar Square”.

Marcos has given lectures throughout the US and Canada and currently lives in New York City, where he teaches Fashion Illustration at the School of Visual Arts.

The final exhibition of the 1st round tour is DUMBO, which is known as New York’s biggest art community in Brooklyn.

The two exhibitions are held simultaneously at both venues; ZAKKA which is known as an art shop and a creative space in New York. OUCHI Gallery, a gallery in a homelike atmosphere introducing the works of Japanese artists. During exhibitions, various workshops that suit to individual venues will be held, so everybody from adult to child can casually be challenged to make their own eco bags enjoyably. A limited numbers of NY memorial eco bags and the original Japanese “Happy Bags” are also sold.

Thanks to everyone who attended the Decob in Shanghai.

Opening reception at the Foundry

On January 10th, the decob in Shanghai opened the event with a great night of fantastic music! We had a special live performance guest Dadongxiang. Our main venue, Foundry is one of the hottest contemporary gallery located in the heart of commercial area called Jingan-district.

In this two-weeks exhibition, the Foundry and Ligare Gallery had teamed up and hosted eco-bag workshops. On January 17th and 18th, Fiber Art instructors, Hidemi Shimura & Sanae Tanabe demonstrated Plant Dying & Tie-dyeing technique. Art collective, PAINTMOB hosted a workshop on basics of acrylic paint original eco bag making.
From kids to adult, everyone involved with the workshops had fantastic afternoons.

special showcase at the Sample Square

From February 14 through 28, the decob in Shanghai relocated to the Sample Square, Shanghai’s latest hot spot for fashion and culture. PAINTMOB returned and hosted workshop on the 28th. We had a great success with this special showcase.

We would like to thank all visitors to the Decob in Shanghai. And we would also like to thank for our sponsors, our friends in Shanghai who helped to organize this event! GREAT JOB!
